Speciwomen magazine – Issue 2
“Everyone is welcome” seems to be the mantra of Speciwomen, a new annual publication celebrating femme artists from all over the world. Each issue delves into cinema, music, dance, fashion, photography, and visual and culinary arts to explore the work created by young women and femmes.
Issue 2 explores the themes of home and displacement; it prominently features the art of women who have moved from the place they originally called home, whose sense of identity is tied strongly to their art due to their nomadic past or present.
The interviews in Speciwomen cover a wide range of artist. In music, Neah Gray talks to OWO, a New York based Nigerian musician about how her heritage has influenced her sound. In fashion, Priyanka Voruganti sits down with Akua Shabaka, the co-founder of House of Aama, to discuss how the mother-daughter fashion brand has grown. Meanwhile in cinema, Gina Piersanti and Alex Westfall talk about how a sense of “transnationality” has affected Alex’s work as a filmmaker.
Overall, Speciwomen Issue 2 provides a fascinating insight into the lives of female creators across the globe.
