What do magazines mean to you?

This week we catch up with Nick Tydeman a fashion and portrait photographer who has worked with the likes of Hackett, Zara and Gieves & Hawkes to name but a few.

Tell us about yourself and how you work?

I work very closely with art directors, producers and designers on developing photoshoots. A lot of my ideas and inspiration come from constantly consuming imagery and visuals; visiting classic and contemporary exhibitions, trawling magazines and indulging in a wide range of interests from art & design, science and travel, as well as the diversity in photography.

What do magazines mean to you?

As well as books and magazines, I tend to concentrate what I buy, mostly photography paraphernalia, art and interesting furniture & design. To me, a good, treasured magazine is as important as owning a classic book. I always find it so exciting working with graphic designers and editors, seeing their edit of a story that I have photographed, especially seeing my work in print, that’s always hugely rewarding. My published work includes GQ, The Rake and Vanity Fair.

The same goes for all magazines, they’re the final production of everyone involved, from initial concept to the copywriters, right down to the designer’s layout and choice of paper, I love the tactility. Magazines are also a great way to own incredible work, it’s not quite framing an original piece of art but it’s still so rewarding revisiting and appreciating great creativity.

What was your first magazine and what is a stand out memory?

My first magazine - a subscription - was Sidewalk, a skateboarding magazine. As well as reading about my favourite skaters, it gave me the fundamental understanding of the correlation between great photography and graphic design. The covers alone were worth the purchase. I’ve always been shit at skating but certainly have Sidewalk to thank for even considering a career in photography.

I’m less loyal these days to one particular magazine, some months one of my favourite titles will be packed front to back with unique stories, then the next month have nothing that interests me at all. I find shopping for magazines the most exciting part; discovering a new title, a photographer you’ve never heard of or a new artist or designer. I always keep my eye on a regular set of titles; So It Goes, Suitcase, Holiday, Lodestars, Nat Geo. They all have such great photography and stories, which can be a great window into a different culture or experience.

Why are magazines so special/enjoyable during this period of lockdown?

I love being able to grasp a magazine, getting close to the images in their entirety, unlike zooming in on a screen; I really love the tactility of it. During this lockdown I’m unable to shoot for clients so I’m concentrating on developing new ideas and keeping inspired. Having my magazines enables me to sit back and indulge and take a proper break from my screen, without distractions. I have various spots around the house and garden where I read, depending on the time of day, the light and ambience has to be right.

How does print inspire your work/how does it differ from digital screen imagery?

A large percentage of my work ends up on a screen, particularly social media, which we consume at such a fast pace that we tend not to fully acknowledge or appreciate what we’re consuming.

Holding a magazine and admiring the details, feeling the weight and the texture of the paper in your hand is far more inspiring than just scrolling through endless images on a tiny screen. Eighty percent of what I remember and use as inspiration is what I’ve experienced in print or at an exhibition.
